Six new Supreme Court judges set to take oath tomorrow

In a significant development, six newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court are set to be sworn in tomorrow. The oath-taking ceremony will be presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad.

Key Highlights of the Ceremony:

  • Oath Administration: CJP Yahya Afridi will administer the oath to the newly appointed judges.
  • Attendees: The event will be attended by sitting judges of the Supreme Court, the attorney general, representatives from the bar, and prominent lawyers.
  • Official Notification: The formal notification confirming the appointments is expected to be issued shortly.

Appointments Approved by Judicial Commission:
The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), led by CJP Afridi, finalized the appointments on Monday. The newly elevated judges include:

  • Chief Justice Aamer Farooq (Islamabad High Court)
  • Chief Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui (Sindh High Court)
  • Chief Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar (Balochistan High Court)
  • Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim (Peshawar High Court)

Additionally, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar of the Sindh High Court has been elevated to the Supreme Court, while Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb of the Islamabad High Court has been nominated as an acting judge.

Controversy Surrounding Appointments:
The appointments come amid ongoing debates within the judiciary. Earlier, four Supreme Court judges had urged CJP Afridi to delay new appointments until the decision on the 26th Amendment case is finalized. However, the JCP proceeded with the appointments, marking a significant reshuffle in the apex court.

The ceremony tomorrow is expected to be a landmark event, shaping the future trajectory of Pakistan’s judiciary.
